        Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will lay the foundation stone for India’s first bullet train in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state Gujarat this week, in a tightening of ties just days after New Delhi ended a dangerous military confrontation with China.The move by Abe, who starts a two-day visit to India on Wednesday, highlights an early lead for Japan in a sector where the Chinese have also been trying to secure a foothold, but without much success.

        Australia’s prudential regulator said on Wednesday that money-laundering accusations leveled at the Commonwealth Bank of Australia do not challenge the bank’s viability.The country’s biggest lender was sued by financial intelligence agency AUSTRAC  over 53,700 suspected breaches of money-laundering laws.The case is the biggest of its kind in Australian corporate history, potentially exposing the bank to billions of dollars in fines.“It’s had negligible impact in terms of loss of customers, loss of deposits, or any other impact that would make a material difference to the viability of the bank.”


        LONDON

        Two U.S. astronauts and a Russian cosmonaut arrived at the International Space Station on Wednesday, about six hours after their Soyuz spacecraft blasted off from Kazakhstan, a NASA TV broadcast showed.The crew successfully performed a fast-track transit to the station, which orbits about 250 miles (400 km) above Earth, to begin a five-month mission. Failure would have forced the spacecraft to take a two-day route for another attempt at docking.

        Destruction wrought by Mexico’s massive earthquake has put a spotlight on the quasi-matriarchal indigenous traditions of the worst affected town, with women and third-gender ‘muxes’ playing a leading role in the aftermath of the disaster.Located in Mexico’s narrow isthmus region, Juchitan bore the brunt of the 8.1 magnitude earthquake that flattened thousands of buildings in the humid market town in a matter of seconds and took at least 98 lives nationwide.
